Meal Frequency and Metabolism

The idea that eating more frequently "boosts metabolism" is not supported by controlled research. The thermic effect of food (energy used to digest and absorb food) is proportional to total intake, not meal frequency. A meta-analysis by Leidy et al. (JADA, 2010) found no significant difference in total energy expenditure between 3 and 6 meals per day when calories and macronutrients were matched. Choose a meal pattern that fits your lifestyle and helps you maintain consistent intake.

Protein Distribution

While meal frequency doesn't directly affect metabolism, protein distribution does matter for muscle protein synthesis. Research by Areta et al. (Journal of Physiology, 2013) showed that consuming 20g protein every 3 hours produced greater muscle protein synthesis than the same total protein in fewer, larger doses. Target 0.4 g/kg per meal, spread across 3–4 sittings, for optimal anabolic response.

FAQs

How to split calories across meals?

Total daily intake matters more than timing. Distribute protein across 3–4 meals of 20–40g each. Front-loading (larger breakfast) may aid weight management in some studies.

Is breakfast most important?

Evidence is mixed. No weight loss benefit in RCTs (Dhurandhar et al., 2014). Linked to better diet quality observationally. Morning exercisers may benefit from pre/post-workout nutrition.
